Laws of nature.

Waking up every morning is a small miracle in itself. As we slowly rouse from our sleep, we become aware of the world around us – a world in which natural laws are constantly at work and support our very existence. Although we often ignore these laws, they can be a surprisingly solid starting point for starting the day with a fresh perspective.

Imagine taking a few moments each morning to “test” the laws of nature from the comfort of your own bed. Such a simple routine can not only be a fun start, but also a way to put your brain in the right frame of mind and experience a basic sense of certainty and stability. By briefly running through each law, you reinforce the idea that nature is predictable and reliable. Even the most fundamental forces are always there, ready to guide us through each new day.

Here's a simple step-by-step plan to explore each of the laws of nature briefly and practically as soon as you wake up – so you're physically and mentally prepared to take on the day.

1. Newton's laws:

  • First law (law of inertia): Try to stand up slowly at first and notice how your body wants to remain still. This is inertia! As soon as you start moving, you will feel the “victory” of this law.
  • Second law (acceleration law): Move one arm up and down quickly. Do you feel the harder you want to move, the more force you have to exert? That's F = m * a in action.
  • Third Law (Action-Reaction): Press your hand against the wall or bed. Do you feel the wall push back just as hard? Voilà, action-reaction.

2. The law of conservation of energy:

  • Imagine that you have just woken up and are slowly starting to move. Realize that the energy in your body does not simply disappear, but spreads: from resting energy to moving energy. Transform this thought into a gentle stretch to “feel” energy moving through your body.

3. The law of conservation of mass:

  • Pick up a bottle of water that you have next to your bed. Realize that the mass of this water always remains the same, whether it is in the bottle or later in your body.

4. Coulomb's law (electric charge):

  • Rub your hands together to create friction and static electricity. Then gently hold them above your blanket and feel the slight “electrical” pull as static electricity is created.

5. Thermodynamic laws:

  • First law: When you have a warm blanket around you, realize that heat energy is transferred from the blanket to you.
  • Second law: Remove the blanket and feel the heat escaping – an example of entropy.
  • Third law: Remember that your body never really reaches 0 Kelvin (absolute zero), which is good because you need energy to start the day!

6. The law of gravity:

  • Roll yourself a little to the edge of the bed and feel the pull of gravity. The world literally “pulls” you in, even at 7am!

7. The laws of electromagnetism:

  • Place your hand on a phone or alarm clock that generates a magnetic field (such as a battery-powered alarm clock). Realize that the laws of electromagnetic energy cause electric current and magnetism to work through your devices.

8. The law of conservation of momentum:

  • Place a ball (or anything that can roll) next to you on the bed and gently push it. The motion will continue until your bed “stops” it – a simple demonstration of conservation of momentum.

With these simple yet powerful exercises, you will not only start your day feeling wide awake, but also with a keen awareness of the laws of nature that guide your day!
