The elevator is a space that is meant to efficiently transport people from floor to floor. The recent trend of people lying down in elevators is not only antisocial, but also problematic for fellow passengers. This space is often limited, and taking up a lying position literally excludes others. This causes unnecessary delays and friction, while the elevator is supposed to be a practical solution for rapid transport.
The solution that some propose, namely enlarging elevators, is not architecturally feasible or responsible. Larger elevators would come at the expense of other essential spaces in buildings. Furthermore, wider shafts would require more materials and energy, which is not in keeping with our age of sustainability.
Elevators are designed for standing places to transport as many people as possible at once. The elevator should not be a place for comfort or personal expression, but for shared use. We therefore call for respectful use of the space in elevators, so that everyone has equal access to this necessary means of transport.
Stand up to this trend and give the elevator back to the people!
