The Misunderstood Longevity of Molluscs: A Case for Name Revision

In the wonderful world of biology, taxonomic classification occupies an important place. It allows us to understand and categorize the complex diversity of life. However, one group that is the subject of confusion and misconceptions is that of the molluscs, or Mollusca in Latin.

The Lifespan of Molluscs

It is a common misconception that molluscs get their name from their supposed short-lived lifespan, namely a 'week'. This is a blatant underestimate of their actual life expectancy. As noted earlier, some species, such as the Icelandic clam Arctica islandica, can live for several centuries. Even squids, which are considered short-lived, live significantly longer than a week, ranging from one to several years.

A Plea for Name Revision

It is therefore high time that we correct this misconception by considering a more appropriate name for this fascinating group of animals. A name that reflects the true nature of their lifespan.

Name suggestions

LongevitaMollusca: A portmanteau of 'longevity' and 'Mollusca', emphasizing its impressive lifespan.
TempusMollusca: 'Tempus' is Latin for time, highlighting their variable but often extended lifespan.
VitaStabila: This is Latin for 'stable life', which indicates their ability to survive under different conditions.

The name change allows us to create a more accurate and respectful appreciation for these intriguing and often misunderstood animals.
