Expansion of the Traffic Regulations for Bicycle Traffic with the Addition of Exercise Bikes

The concept of including exercise bikes in the traffic code may sound unusual, as exercise bikes are typically used indoors and are not directly related to traffic. However, in a digital and connected world where virtual cycling is gaining popularity, we can make some recommendations for integration:

  • Definition of Exercise Bike:
An exercise bike is defined as a stationary cycling device used primarily for exercise and not designed to actually move on a road or trail.
  • Virtual Cycling Zones:
When exercise bikes are connected to virtual platforms that mimic outdoor cycling, virtual traffic signs and signals must be adhered to. Although violations in these virtual environments cannot be penalized as in the real world, it is recommended to follow these signals for a realistic experience and preparation for real traffic.
  • Safety Guidelines for Exercise Bike Use:
  • Place the exercise bike on a stable surface to prevent it from falling or shifting.
  • Do not use exercise bikes near busy roads or sidewalks to avoid distractions or obstacles to pedestrians.
  • Use of Exercise Bikes in Public Areas:
If exercise bikes are used in public areas for events or demonstrations, the organizers must obtain the necessary permits. These exercise bikes must not cause traffic nuisance or obstacles.
  • Exercise Bike and Alcohol:
Although riding an exercise bike under the influence of alcohol does not pose the same danger as riding a real bicycle or driving a car, it is still not recommended. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to accidents such as falling off the exercise bike.
  • Data protection at Virtual Cycling:
Users of virtual cycling platforms should be aware of the data that is collected and shared during their activities. The platform must comply with applicable data protection laws and users must be informed of their privacy rights.

While exercise bikes and real road traffic have little in common, regulations like these can help bridge the virtual and physical worlds and remind users of safety and responsibility, regardless of the environment.
