Pedestrians.

The growing number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians is a worrying phenomenon. To ensure the safety of pedestrians, it is necessary to take effective measures. One of these measures is making helmets mandatory for pedestrians. In this paper I will argue why helmet wearing by pedestrians is essential, not only for protection against external hazards, but also against the risks arising from interaction with fellow pedestrians.

First, wearing a helmet can protect pedestrians from external hazards. In urban areas, pedestrians are often exposed to many risks, such as falling building materials, unwary cyclists and scooters, and in some cases even flying glass in a traffic accident. Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of head injury, which can lead to serious and sometimes fatal injuries.

Second, the helmet can protect pedestrians from hazards arising from interactions with fellow pedestrians. In busy urban areas, such as shopping streets and public transport, pedestrians can be exposed to risks such as collisions, pushing and pulling, or even violent attacks. A helmet can help protect the head from injury in such incidents.

In addition, making helmets compulsory for pedestrians can lead to greater awareness of the dangers in traffic. When people wear helmets, they are more aware of the need to be careful and avoid potential hazards. This in turn can lead to a safer traffic situation for everyone, not just pedestrians.

Some opponents of this idea will argue that wearing a helmet is uncomfortable and can negatively affect social life. While it is true that some people may find wearing a helmet uncomfortable, today there are many helmet designs that focus on comfort and ease of use. In addition, wearing a helmet can also be seen as a fashion item, allowing the social aspect of wearing a helmet to be embraced rather than avoided.

Another argument often used by opponents is that making helmets compulsory for pedestrians places the responsibility for road safety entirely on the pedestrian, rather than on other road users such as motorists. While it is true that all road users are responsible for road safety, helmet wearing by pedestrians can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury and thus contribute to overall road safety. It is important to emphasize that making helmets compulsory for pedestrians does not mean that other road users can evade their responsibility. On the contrary, it is an additional measure that can increase road safety awareness among all participants.

Moreover, making helmets compulsory for pedestrians would not be unique compared to other traffic safety regulations. For example, there are already rules for wearing helmets by cyclists, motorcyclists and moped riders. These rules were introduced to increase the safety of these road users, and the same principle could be applied to pedestrians as well.

In conclusion, making helmets mandatory for pedestrians is a necessary and feasible measure to ensure pedestrian safety. Helmets provide protection against both external hazards and hazards arising from interactions with fellow pedestrians. While there are some objections to the idea, the road safety and awareness benefits are significant. It is time that we take pedestrian safety seriously and take appropriate measures to reduce the number of road accidents and casualties.
