Stationary windmills as a clock: an innovative use of existing infrastructure

This proposal advocates the use of stationary windmills as clocks. By making small adjustments to the length of the vanes, they can be converted into an hour, minute and second hand. This innovative use of existing infrastructure can contribute to sustainability and education.

Windmills have been used to generate energy for centuries. They are a familiar sight in the Dutch landscape and are increasingly used as a sustainable energy source. However, when a windmill is stationary, it is often seen as a lost investment and has no useful function. In this proposal we propose to use stationary windmills as clocks, by making small adjustments to the length of the blades.

Little research has been done on the use of stationary windmills as clocks. However, there have been similar projects where existing infrastructure was converted into a clock, such as the Verlichte Zuil in Rotterdam. This clock uses the lighting to indicate the time. These types of projects can contribute to awareness of sustainability and can be educational in nature.

To use stationary windmills as a clock, minor adjustments must be made to the length of the blades. For example, an extra vane can be added, which functions as a second hand. The other two vanes can be adjusted in length to create the minute and hour hands. This can be done by means of a computer program that calculates the movements of the blades.

By using stationary windmills as a clock, existing infrastructure can be used in an innovative way. This can contribute to sustainability and education. It is a creative way to give stationary windmills a new function and prevent them from being seen as a lost investment.

Using stationary windmills as clocks is an innovative and creative way to give existing infrastructure a new function. By making small adjustments to the length of the blades, they can be converted into an hour, minute and second hand. This can contribute to sustainability and education. It is an interesting project that can contribute to raising awareness about the possibilities of sustainable energy and the reuse of existing infrastructure.
